YIELDING TO STILLNESS, EMBRACING HARMONY

On this Libra full moon, I reflect on balance and the need for harmony in our lives more than ever in this time of unrest. I am grateful to my teachers and all that I have learned and practiced with them. They have helped me to to more fully yield, surrender and trust, even in these most uncertain and tumultuous circumstances. I have been blessed with many tools from my studies in Reiki, Yoga and T'ai Chi and now I have an even greater appreciation for them as I contemplate their profound benefits.

In our Chakra Series we have been exploring the opposing energies of Yin and Yang through Water (The Sacral Chakra) and Fire (The Solar Plexus Chakra) practicing both Lunar (Chandara) and Solar (Suyra) Salutations (Namaskar) as well as nostril "piercing" breath practices (Bhedana).

As my T'ai Chi teacher has recently emphasized and I absolutely agree, this is indeed a time for Yin, for developing deep qualities of listening, releasing and letting go of tightly held patterns of doing and striving. We have a rare opportunity to draw our attention inwards to explore and cultivate our soft and receptive qualities. However, I do like to think as all things have there opposites, there is a way to focus and channel our innate Yang qualities as well. Through my practice and study of yoga I like to understand the masculine Ha energy as being beneficial in these times to give us courage, consistency and persistency in the face of challenge. The strength and foundation of Ha can help us to set boundaries and discipline for ourselves at a time when we can get easily lost or addicted to new numbing distractions as we find ourselves without the stability of our normal daily routines and overbooked schedules. The element of fire, ignited through friction and "going against the grain," as understood in yoga, provides us the spark, determination or Tapas, the discipline, to sit with discomfort, inconvenience and persist through unpleasant emotions and circumstances. When in balance and harmony, I experience the Masculine Ha or Yang energy as a space holder for the Feminine Tha or Yin energy; supporting it, rather than opposing it.

In relation to balance, I also see that now is a time to cultivate both a broad and focused vision, like an eagle that soars high, looking down from above and at the same time hones in with great accuracy and focus to its object of intention. We ourselves can develop a broad vision, in the way that we can consider the "big picture" of our unprecedented times, what this means for our society and humanity as whole, as well as looking more closely and directly to more personal experiences, those of our neighbors, close friends and our immediate community, who are all effected to different degrees and extremes. How can we participate? What is our task? How can we be of service? If we can take this time to look at ourselves more closely, witness both the light and the shadow of our own humanity, perhaps we can recognize the faults and injustices in the world around us and how they were created. Having focused on healing our own inner dialogue and self-created suffering, perhaps we can look outwardly with more faith, compassion and optimism. We should never underestimate the power of a simple word or gesture to shift the mindset or emotions of those around us. We can start by focusing our energy and attention to the small things in our lives that are in our control. We can focus on actionable and intentional steps of self-care and care for our loved ones, then perhaps expand our vision and intention outward to a wider and wider circle. For those things that are much bigger than us, far beyond our reach, we must allow ourselves an even wider vision, to let go a little, so that we can prepare ourselves to ride the inevitable waves that are yet to come.

A message from White Eagle, of the Hopi Nation on 16/03/2020

“This moment humanity is going through can now be seen as a portal and as a hole. The decision to fall into the hole or go through the portal is up to you. If you are obsessed with the problem and consume the news 24 hours a day, with little energy, nervous all the time, with pessimism, you will fall into the hole. But if you take this opportunity to look at yourself, rethink life and death, take care of yourself and others, you will cross the portal. Take care of your home, take care of your body. Connect with the middle body of your spiritual House. Connect to your spiritual home. When you are taking care of one, you are taking care of everything else. Do not lose the spiritual dimension of this crisis, have the aspect of the eagle, which from above, sees the whole, sees more widely. There is a social demand in this crisis, but there is also a spiritual demand. The two go hand in hand. Without the social dimension, we fall into fanaticism. But without the spiritual dimension, we fall into pessimism and lack of meaning. You have prepared to go through this crisis. Take your toolbox and use all the tools at your disposal. Learn about resistance with indigenous and African peoples: we have always been and continue to be exterminated. But we still haven't stopped singing, dancing, lighting a fire and having fun. Don't feel guilty about being happy during this difficult time. You don't help at all by being sad and without energy. It helps if good things emanate from the Universe now. It is through joy that one resists. Also, when the storm passes, you will be very important in the reconstruction of this new world. You need to be well and strong. And, for that, there is no other way than to maintain a beautiful, happy and bright vibration. This has nothing to do with alienation. This is a resistance strategy. In shamanism, there is a rite of passage called the quest for vision. You spend a few days alone in the forest, without water, without food, without protection. When you go through this portal, you get a new vision of the world, because you have faced your fears, your difficulties ... This is what is asked of you. What world do you want to build for yourself? For now, this is what you can do: serenity in the storm. Calm down and pray. Everyday. Establish a routine to meet the sacred every day. Good things emanate, what you emanate now is the most important thing. And sing, dance, resist through art, joy, faith and love.”

Find clarity, stillness and introspection through practice.

YogaWorks and Yoga Tree Fundraiser

YogaWorks and Yoga Tree have temporarily closed all of their studios in an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19. Despite this closure, they have maintained their commitment to you, their dedicated students, to continue to offer best in class yoga through live streaming classes. As a result of this temporary change in their business, unfortunately many of the teachers and staff who are part of your daily lives are experiencing pay disruption. In an effort to show that we are united in our yoga practice, they have opened this fundraiser in which 100% of proceeds will go directly towards funding teachers' payroll. Show your pride in being part of this incredible community and support your local studio by ordering an apparel item or directly donating any dollar amount here.

THANK YOU for your continued passion, dedication and support.
